Scouting Notes

Summary By Zachary DeVine · Game: Feb 12, 2016 · Everett vs Portland (WHL) · Live #0
Caleb Jones not on the scoresheet but makes good, fast decisions with the puck. Sees the ice really well and haven’t seen a bad pass or play from him all night. Steady play all around.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Feb 14, 2016 · Victoria vs Portland (WHL) · Live #0
Jones rubs out Soy to eliminate him, joins the play going the other way and beats Outhouse to win the game.

Jones with two clearing attempts intercepted.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Feb 14, 2016 · Victoria vs Portland (WHL) · Live #0
Had the game-winning goal on a smart defensive play: Rubs Tyler Soy out on the boards in order to separate the man from the puck, skates out of the zone, smart pass to a winger, drives the net to pot the game winner. Jones isn’t as dynamic as his brother, but the hockey smarts are there and he is a very good skater.

Jones either does too little to far too much. Needs to find some middle ground in his game.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 30, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Stream #0
Jones has very good acceleration and balance on his skates
Summary By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 30, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Stream #0
Jones’ series could only be viewed as a disappointment. He was largely quiet for long stretches of the game and had trouble carrying the puck against the Everett trap. When he was noticeable, he was trying to do everything by himself and force plays. Liked his game better earlier in the year.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 29, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Stream #0
Jones has been a non-factor in the first
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 29, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Stream #0
Jones completely flat footed on the Leedahl goal. It’s been a terrible three viewings of him.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 29, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Stream #0
Jones wakes up, but again not using his teammates.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 25, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Live #0
Jones takes the puck himself and crashes the net, dangerous chance.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Mar 25, 2016 · Portland vs Everett (OHL) · Live #0
Jones trying to do too much on his own, not using teammates
Summary By Zachary DeVine · Game: Aug 2, 2016 · NJEC 2016 - NJEC · Live #0
Continues to confuse me. At times has solid puck skills and good decisions. Next shift is selfish and forcing plays while carrying the puck. Has a tendency to skate himself right out of the play as well. Physical tools are there, but the on-ice awareness and use of teammates has to be much better.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Jul 30, 2016 · NJEC 2016 - USA Team Blue vs. Team Finland · Live #0
Caleb Jones has some impressive skills, but I’d like to see him use his teammates more.
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Aug 2, 2016 · NJEC 2016 - Team USA vs Team Sweden · Live #0
Jones hops more than he transitions
Note By Zachary DeVine · Game: Aug 2, 2016 · NJEC 2016 - Team USA vs Team Sweden · Live #0
Parts of Caleb Jones’s vision worry me. He can hone in on a play and not see his teammates, both with the puck and defensively, as well.
Note By Brian Fogarty · Game: Dec 26, 2016 · USA vs. Latvia (WJC 2017) · Live #0
Takes a risk trying to bat down a pass with his hand and attack, but fails to collect the puck, turns and chases back to the right spot and intercepts a pass in the D zone

Starting to look more and more like his brother on the ice.

Consistently accurate passes on the outlet or powerplay. Makes his passes easy to receive

Carries the puck into the zone with authority
Note By Brian Fogarty · Game: Mar 4, 2017 · Kelowna vs Portland (WHL) · Video (With Replay) #0
Speed, skating, stickhandling turns a defending forward inside out on transition into the zone
