The Prospect Stock Exchange is a marketplace for buying and selling shares of hockey prospects as they enter the NHL draft until they graduate from prospect status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why did you create the Hockey Prophets Prospect Stock Exchange©?
A: In the prospectverse, there are so many discussions about Player A's "stock is rising" and Player B's "stock is dropping" that I thought it would be cool to have an actual stock exchange in which players' stock prices could actually rise and fall. It sounded fun, so I built it.
Q: What is a Point Share?
A: Point Shares are a calculation created by Justin Kubatko as a method of analyzing a player's contribution to his team's success. Hockey-Reference.com will be the source data for Point Shares used in the Prospect Stock Exchange.
Q: If a player reaches 24 years of age but does not reach the 40-game threshold for graduation, what happens to his share price?
A: Prospects will automatically graduate at the end of the season during which they turn 24. If they have not played in 40 NHL games prior to that, they will graduate and close at a price of $0/share.
Q: What about goaltenders?
A: Goal may be included in draft class IPOs, and will adjust accordingly after the draft based on their actual draft selection, but due to the fact that most goaltenders take longer to develop into NHL players, they will be settled and closed directly after their post-draft adjustments.
Q: When will the next draft class be added as IPOs?
A: Once the major publications have started publishing their 2027 draft rankings (TSN, Athletic, Sportsnet, McKeens, etc.) I will complile and weight their rankings and use that list as the basis for IPO prices. The IPO list will be published a week prior to the IPO release date.
