At times Johnston looks like a player who will make a difference, but then his skating or decisions fail him. His straight-ahead skating is good, but his turns are not crisp enough, which leaves him slowing on his change of direction and magnifying any poor choices he makes on angles of attack. He often missed the net even when in close, which is a shame because he kept working hard and getting into the spots on the ice where he could make an impact but his hands and feet failed him when he got there.
