Scouting Notes
Note
#0
Looks like an average skater, speed is just okay, but he just unleashed a monster slapshot that handcuffed the netminder. I thought that was in.
Note
#0
Wrist shot has zip, too.
Note
#0
Back defending a two-on-one, communicating well with his defensive partner, but ultimately gets turned around and lost at the circle.
Note
#0
Another huge one-time slapper. Wow, does he like to rifle that thing on net.
Note
#0
Now he wrists one up for a tip in, which is completed for the game's second goal. Hoefenmayer has nice variety of weapons from the blue line.
Note
#0
Takes a great angle to a possible breakaway and uses a long reach to swat the puck away.
Note
#0
A few of his passes have been behind his targets on the move. His shot is definitely better than his passing.
Note
#0
Looks like an experienced OHL defender, making smart plays all over the ice.
Summary
#0
There's a lot to like about Hoefenmayer, particularly his rocket shot. Plays a smart game in his own end, showing positioning and awareness, but it's when he turns up ice that he really drives play. Maybe his passing isn't as sharp as it could be, but he shoots hard and accurately and brings a variety of speeds and angles to the net. He will lead a charge, but stays responsible and gets back to his defense with urgency. I like his play a lot, but as an older player in the OHL, the real test will come soon when he takes that step into the pro ranks. If he can translate his play up the ladder (which I see no reason to doubt) he could become a quality middle-pair NHL type who works the point on the powerplay, too.
Note
#0
On the right point, puck comes around the rim to him, and he is able to smoothly pull the puck off the wall with his backhand, slide to the forehand, and rip a shot.
Note
#0
And there is Hoefenmayer's weakness: he just got caught lunging for a poke check in his own end and allows the attacker to step around him and get a clean shot on goal.
Note
#0
Uses his speed and long stick, takes a good angle, and drives the puck carrier to the boards, then Hoefenmayer knocks the puck free.
Note
#0
Another bomb from Hoefenmayer. He's just firing shots on net one after another.
Note
#0
Defending a 5-on-3, so the coach has confidence in his defensive capabilities.
Summary
#0
Credited with six shots in this game, but he must have had at least twice as many attempts. When he's on the ice, the puck finds him. Still work to do in his zone, but outside of his zone, he's a threat, for certain. Unlike some other highly offense-oriented defenders of recent years, Hoefenmayer looks like he is committed to improving his defensive game and willing to put in the hard work in his zone. He's likely a player that will need to prove his worth and polish his two-way game in the AHL for a couple of years, but he also looks NHL capable.
