On the powerplay, the puck was sent deep into his own zone. When Dell (Bakersfield G) left the puck off, Mueller failed to get back to support his teammate and a turnover to the forechecker led directly to a wrap-around goal while Mueller stood in the slot watching the play.

Took a pass in the defensive zone during a line reset. Passed to his forward coming back towards him, but the better play was a D-to-D pass. Mueller's choice led to a turnover and a shot on goal against. Later in the period, in the same circumstances, Mueller went D-to-D.

Mueller displayed good defensive positioning at time, and there were shifts during the game during which his selection at 18th overall in the 2013 draft seemed warranted. However, far more often he disappeared, especially in the offensive zone. Mueller's lack of creativity left him pushing soft-touched but deliberate, telegraphed passes to his line mates. He never seemed to drive play at all, and that is worrisome for a player who spent significant time in the NHL last season. Mueller is not yet 21 years of age, so there is a chance he can develop his defensive play enough to get back to the NHL, but his offense will not get him there.

Mueller has taken a step backwards this year. With 39 games in the NHL last year and looking inexperienced but not completely out of place, this year in the AHL he has two speeds: panicked, or lazy. Made a number of poor, uninspired plays, one of which he turned over the puck then did little to challenge the puck thief, who promptly scored a shorthanded goal with Mueller simply watching. His already predictable plays become even more so after a mistake and other teams are keying on this. Has turned from a prospect to a project.
