Calder Contender Provorov Playing Like A Veteran For The Flyers

January 4, 2017 by Zachary DeVine

The 2015 NHL Entry Draft is already shaping up to be a fantastic cohort for NHL defensemen. Nine defenders have already made their NHL debut and among them is the 6-foot, 200-pound native of Yaroslavl, Russia, Ivan Provorov.

After a year with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League, the offensively gifted left-handed rearguard was the Wheat Kings first round selection in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft ahead of the 2014-15 season. He burst on the scene with a 61-point performance during his draft year and was widely considered a top-10 pick. Provorov was off the board with the seventh overall pick by the Philadelphia Flyers. He followed up his impressive draft year with a 21-goal, 52-assist effort as the Wheat Kings would advance all the way to the Memorial Cup Championship.

"It was a fun year; it was a fun two years," Provorov said of his time in the WHL. "We dominated a lot, have a lot of good offensive players who scored a lot of goals as a team."
